Did you ever stop and talk about college life with your high school friends? Did the topic of joining a sorority cross y'all's minds?

If it did, you and your girls might have had one big question in mind: “Why should I join a sorority?”

Believe it or not, most sorority girls have more or less similar reasons for joining, depending on the advantages of being in a sorority that speaks to their goals. If you’re not sure whether or not going through Recruitment is right for you, consider these benefits of joining a sorority:

Sororities are great for making lifelong quality friendships

College is a whole new world, and most of the time it’s really nerve-wracking. This is especially true if you’re going to school far away from home and don’t know anybody.

Where do you even start finding your people? How can you meet those with the same likes and interests?

That’s where sororities can come in. They are, in essence, a congregation of women who share similar values and may even have the same love for things like music genres, aesthetics, or coffee shop orders (more than just a PSL).

Joining a sorority whose members really speak your language makes it a lot easier for you to not feel like a fish out of water in college. Or take a whole ahh year just trying to find people who share the same interests.

PS: No, sororities are not paid friends. You can check out our debunking of that myth (and several other myths) here. Justice for our sorority sisters smh.

You can be more involved in the community through a sorority’s philanthropy

Have you ever wanted to make a difference, like advocating for animal rights or supporting research and advancements in cancer treatments, but don’t know where to start? Sororities are also a great gateway for you to be more active in your community. Sororities nationwide diligently plan for and participate in philanthropy events every year, and their chapters usually focus on a specific charity.

This is a great criterion for you to consider when choosing chapters you’re interested in. Which sorority is active in a certain philanthropy that you really want to support? There’s bound to be a chapter you lean towards.

Sororities are open to anyone who wants to be leaders

Okay, we know this sounds intimidating, but sororities aren’t just for future senators or congresswomen (although if you wanna be a future POTUS, go for it bestie!). They’re for anyone who also dreams of leadership roles, even just in the chapter. Sororities welcome anyone confident in their chances of becoming a sorority executive leader in their chapter, and it’s fair game for all members.

It doesn’t stop there. If you become elected to a position in the exec team, that’s just the beginning of a challenging but fulfilling year for you, as holding a position hones several skills you need as a working girlie after college.

Things like taking charge, communicating through challenges, decision-making (especially with last-minute stuff), cooperating with other execs, relating to different people, etc. are all attractive skills companies really love to see. And if you go with a self-employed route, you’ll also use those skills to your advantage as you build your business.

Pro-tip: During Recruitment, ask the actives for their chapter’s rules and processes on how to become a sorority executive leader in the future, and if there are any opportunities for new members, too. Chances are, you’ll stand out as a promising PNM.

You can access a wide network of past sorority members

Remember that scene in Legally Blonde when Brooke Windham trusted Elle Woods, and only her, with her real alibi for the unaliving of her husband, was because they’re both in Delta Nu? While you’ll probably never be in that heavy situation, Brooke and Elle’s connection is still a reality among sorority sisters: previous members will always be willing to help a sister out, even after graduation.

Sisterhoods are known for their tight-knit sorority alumni networks. Loyalty defines sorority girls, even after graduation, and this may help you later in life when trying to apply for jobs, gaining the right connections for projects or other endeavors, and maybe even having company for a weekend vacay. In turn, when you graduate, you get to be that same beacon for the future members of your chapter!

If you’ve decided to go through Recruitment because of the benefits of joining a sorority we listed above, here’s a good guide on how to prepare for sorority recruitment as a first-timer. Make sure you have good questions to ask sororities during Recruitment ready, too. Good luck and may the sisterhood odds be ever in your favor!
